One of the last project reveals of 2019 was a favorite and a highlight of our year. Ethel's Club is an innovative and stunning community work space in Brooklyn,  and interior designer Shannon Maldonado of Yowie chose La Strada in gunmetal on cream to feature in one of the spaces' common rooms. On top of all the incredible projects in 2019, we were honored to be selected for some top design awards. Allow us to brag a little bit. ; ) FLUX was selected as best wallcovering by both the esteemed judges of the Architizer A+ Awards and the NYCXDesign Awards, sponsored by Interior Design.  We also also took away the trophy for best tile flooring in Interior Design's Best of Year Awards, and received a Great Design Award from Architectural Digest for our Trapeze tile.

(Portland, OR, May 8, 2019 ) Avery Thatcher, founder/creative director of Portland, Oregon-based wallcoverings studio Juju Papers, adds a new pattern to her animated cement tile collection. Trapeze, followup to last year’s popular Fruit Salad handmade tiles, calls for rotating each tile to create a bespoke layout with every installation. Ideal for residential, hospitality, workplace and public spaces, Trapeze debuts mid-May at ICFF, booth 122.

Thatcher had experience installing tile prior to making her name as a wallpaper designer.  Wishing to create “daredevil acrobatic movement and graceful energy,” she conceived the idea of rotating each tile ⅙ of a turn as the installation proceeds.

  

  

 

DESCRIPTION

Made by hand one at a time in Mexico, the eight-inch diameter hexagonally-shaped cement tiles sport an organic undulating wave or petal motif. Three colorways, Black Blue, White Terra Cotta, and White Blanc, include such sumptuous hues as heather, terra cotta, military blue, and coral. Colors may be customized. A low energy, no-fire process creates a deliciously washy matte finish. Like the brightly colored acrobatic performers for which they are named, the Trapeze tiles interlock and swing apart, seemingly airborne in a prismatic scatter of color and movement. 

Cement tiles, manufactured using a centuries-old technique, are historically associated with symmetrical, traditional Spanish, Moroccan, or Mexican designs. However, the contemporary motifs and improvisational installation designed by Thatcher provide a thrilling shake-up to the category. Further, the variegated matte surface inherent to cement tile is a perfect enhancement to her vibrant palette.

DURABLE AND SAFE

Tile ingredients – marble dust, Portland cement, sand, mineral pigments, concrete – combined with the 1,700 PSI mechanical hydraulic press used in manufacturing, ensure these tiles are durable enough for residential and commercial applications, and both indoor and outdoor use. The tiles are a hefty 5/8” high, and weigh in at three pounds apiece.The wear (top) layer is a full 1/8” thick, making it appropriate for both floors and walls. The coefficient of friction is also well over the .42 standard - averaging in at .65 - making it safe for commercial traffic and wet applications.

Avery Thatcher, Portland, Oregon artist behind the outre chic wallcovering studio Juju Papers, will launch her latest collection at ICFF this May. The new group, called FLUX, is intended for both residential and commercial spaces, and takes its cue from women’s fluctuating and generative roles over personal lifetimes and throughout history. Four complementary patterns - some literal, others abstract - in a total of fourteen colorways, are rendered with arcs, curves and circles, to connote ebb and flow. Design professionals will have a first look during ICFF, booth 122. The collection will be available to consumers and the trade mid May.

  

Explains Thatcher, “The concept of womanhood has been an ongoing inspiration and study. Through the lens of mother, artist, and studio principal, and my experience vs. those of my mother and grandmothers, FLUX looks at the shifting experiences and expectations of feminism. All of the designs in FLUX have a current of flow and undulation, paired with a sturdy, structural balance.”

Thatcher’s idiosyncratic illustrative style is made glamorous through the use of opulent, shimmering metallic inks.

  

La Strada: A large-scale, textural collage of rounded and serpentine forms, made with sponge painting and screen-printing squeegees. Sponge paint, the kitschy ‘90s DIY treatment, is here flipped to become an ornate, polished finish. Four colorways: gold on cream, gold on charcoal, gunmetal on cream, diamonds and pearls on cream.

  

The artist notes that “the (living sea creature) sponge is constantly moving, flowing, while constantly growing. It's a textural gem.”

 

  

Women: Large-scale line drawings of female profiles, depicted with dignity and quiet determination. Four colorways: gold on cream, gold on charcoal, gunmetal on cream, gunmetal on blush.

 

  

Silhouettes: The large-scale collage of sponge paintings and marks made from gel is arranged in a loose scatter that can simultaneously read mid-century and punk. Three colorways: gold on charcoal, celeste [blue] on cream, champagne on cream.

 

  

Waving: A billowing stripe depicting rippling curtains or fabric; it also hints at the rising and falling surf. Three colorways: gold on cream, gold on charcoal, celeste [blue] on cream.
